Honoring National Truth and Reconciliation Day: A Commitment to Healing and Understanding
September 27, 2024
National Truth and Reconciliation Day is a vital occasion for reflection, understanding, and honuoring the Indigenous communities that have been deeply affected by the legacy of residential schools and systemic injustices. Here at Latitude Wellness, we recognize the importance of this day and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation and healing.
Understanding National Truth and Reconciliation Day
National Truth and Reconciliation Day, observed on September 30th, is a day dedicated to remembering the children who suffered in residential schools, honoring survivors, and acknowledging the enduring impact of these institutions on Indigenous communities. It is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the past, educate themselves about the history and culture of Indigenous peoples, and contribute to the ongoing efforts of reconciliation.
At our Latitude Wellness, we believe in the power of healing through understanding and support. We are committed to providing a safe and empathetic space for humans to explore their experiences and emotions related to the legacy of residential schools and other forms of systemic discrimination. Our dedicated team of counsellors is trained to offer culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care, recognizing the unique challenges faced by Indigenous individuals and communities.
Coverage Through Our Indigenous Third Party Partners (FNHA, NVHA, MCC)
To support access to mental health services for Indigenous peoples, we are pleased to have partnered with a number of Indigenous Third Party payers, including First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Métis Nation of British Columbia (MCC), and the Nisga’a Valley Health Authority(NVHA). This coverage allows us to provide counselling and therapeutic services at no cost to individuals who are eligible under these providers. We understand that accessing support can sometimes be a barrier, and we are committed to removing these barriers to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to receive the help they need.
If you or someone you know is seeking support, we encourage you to reach out to our clinic. Our team is here to provide compassionate care and help navigate the process of accessing services through these providers.
Whether you need immediate assistance or are looking for ongoing support, we are committed to being a resource for you. Reach out to us by phone at (778)-899 1195 or through email at hello@latitude-wellness.com.
Trauma-informed Care is a crucial component of our services, designed to address the deep and lasting impacts of trauma with sensitivity and understanding.
All of our practitioners have completed an additional course through Alberta Health Services to become further familiarized with trauma-informed care in all practices and disciplines.
We understand that for many individuals, especially those affected by the legacy of residential schools and other lasting systemic injustices, traditional approaches may not fully address their unique experiences. Trauma-informed care provides a framework that acknowledges and responds to the pervasive effects of trauma, ensuring that individuals receive the compassionate and effective support they need.
Our practitioners are trained to recognize the various ways trauma can affect an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical health. This understanding allows us to tailor our approach to meet each client’s specific needs, taking into account how past experiences may influence their current challenges and responses.
By offering trauma-informed care, we strive to create a therapeutic environment that fosters recovery, resilience, and empowerment, helping individuals build a brighter and more hopeful future.
Culturally Sensitive Counselling
Recognizing and respecting cultural differences is a key aspect of trauma-informed care. Our practitioners understand that culture, tradition, and personal values all play a role in influencing how an individual responds to trauma. Additionally, our dedicated team of counsellors have successfully completed theSan’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) training program, deepening our commitment to understanding and honouring Indigenous histories and cultures. This transformative training has equipped us with the tools to foster respectful relationships and promote healing in our community.
We are ready to apply our knowledge to support Indigenous voices and contribute to meaningful change. Together, we are on a journey towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
